There are double chances of developing heart disease and stroke in diabetic patient as compared to non-diabetics. What types of heart and Brain diseases occur in people with diabetes? Person with diabetes may develop Ischaemic Hear Disease, these days called as Acute coronary Syndrome (ACS). Due to diabetes, the blood vessels which supply blood to your hear muscles narrow thus reducing blood supply to heart, leading to ACS. You may have Angina both stable, unstable, Myocardial Infarction both ST segment elevated and non ST segment elevated. You may have Heart failure as well. Narrowing, thickening or blockage of arteries in the legs, a condition called peripheral arterial disease, can also occur in people with diabetes. Similarly blood flow to brain is reduced due to narrowing of blood vessels to brain leading to cerebral Vascular disease CVA or transient Ischaemic attacks TIA.
What are symptoms of Heart attack and stroke Chest pain associated with sweating and nausea vomiting palpitations breathlessness Usually heart attack seen in diabetic is asymptomatic person will not have any symptoms, as diabetes cause neuropathy leading to silent heart attack. Symptoms of stroke are mainly inability to speak, drooping of eyelid, paralysis of legs or arms, weekness and loss of power and sensation.
Prevention of Heart Disease and Stroke: Always take heart healthy diet, and follow strict diet plan, if you are a patient of diabetes. Increase fiber in your diet, like oatmeal, oat bran, whole grain, cereals, fruits and vegetables. Stop taking saturated fat like meat, poultry skin, fat milk, butter, palm oil or coconut oil. Always try to take unsaturated fat. Olive oil and corn oil are rich in unsaturated fats. Avoid dairy products, eggs and meat as these are rich in cholesterol. Do exercise for at-least half an hour daily regularly. Use stairs instead of elevators. Reach and maintain a healthy body weight. If you are overweight, you must try to do exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. Consult your dietitian for consultation in planning meals and reducing the fat and calorie requirement of your diet to get and maintain desired weight. If you smoke, then stop smoking. Consult your doctor for taking a tablet of Aspirin, as aspirin every day can decrease risk of heart disease and CVA. However, Aspirin should always be taken by consulting your doctor, as aspirin can not be prescribed for everyone.If you have Transient ischaemic attack TIA, then get the treatment immediately, to reduce risk of major stroke or CVA. Sign of a TIA are loss of balance, sudden inability to speak, weekness, confusion, blindness, double vision or headache.
What are the treatment options for Cardiac disease? Regular diet plan, exercise and strict control of blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood glucose. Sometimes medicines are needed to prevent heart damage like anticoagulants, beta blockers, nitrates, ACE inhibitors, Calcium channal blockers etc. Sometimes thrombolytic therapy is indicated. Sometimes you may have to go for angioplasty or bypass surgery. Consult your doctor for treatment options available.
What are the treatment options for stroke? Immidiately get treatment at first sign and symptom of stroke. Doctor may prescribe you drugs like anticoagulants. Subsequent treatment for stroke includes medicines and exercises, as well as surgery to repair the damage. You must follow proper meal plan according to your daily required levels of calories. In addition to that you may need antidiabetic drugs, antihypertensive drugs and cholesterol lowering drugs.
